PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE: PARENTS: STORY
During my junior year in high school I made the ice hockey team and was the starting goalie. But there was one problem: I didn't have enough money for the goaltending equipment, which can be quite expensive. So I got creative. I used my baseball glove with a pad sewn onto the bottom of it, a baseball catcher's chest protector I borrowed from a friend, a lacrosse mask I found at some rummage sale, and old skates. But I absolutely had to have the heavy goalie leg pads because those pucks can break bones. I found some thirdhand ones for twenty bucks, which I earned by babysitting.
I have to admit I was a bit teed off at my parents because everybody else had brand-new equipment. But, again, I didn't have any choice. Either I played with what I had, or I didn't play at all. So I skated out there and did pretty well. I used my anger about not having good equipment to help block every puck that came at me. By the way, that's another O'Reilly tip—it's okay to get angry about stuff, but channel that anger so that it helps you. I could have quit the team and moped around, but what good would that have done? That's just not smart. Instead, I had a great time, and my team made the playoffs.
Yes, I still resented my parents for a long time because they didn't supply me with what some other kids had . . . but you have the chance to be smarter than I was.
As I've already said, life is not fair. Learn this now!
And that means you will not get everything you want in life. You can take that as a negative, or you can look (or the positive in that truth. Your parents may disagree with you on some issue, but when you open your mind and figure out why, you will be more mature and will also understand how lucky you are. Their motives have to do with their love for you, with their concern for keeping the family stable, with the hard work they're doing to make your life comfortable.
You think you want parents who give you everything you want? But you're wrong. Those parents are not preparing you for life. Unless they are going to stand beside you, handing you money, as you go out in the world, buy a house, and raise your own family, they will be giving you a dangerously false impression of your future.
Finally, as I suggested earlier, there are a few parents out there who are truly toxic. They are people with emotional problems, or people who are prisoners of addiction, unable to empathize with you or anyone else.
If you are a child of that type of parent, you have it tough, and 1 feel for you. But you can't give up. You must learn how to find adults—relatives, teachers, counselors, coaches, or neighbors—who are good people and can give you good advice when you need it. You will also have to find friends who are mature enough to help you through bad times.
If you have younger sisters and brothers, you have the responsibility of looking out for them, too.
And as long as your parents are not abusing you or others around you, you should do your best—difficult as it is—to stay with your family until you get a good education and can make it on your own.
These are guidelines, not a solution. I know that I can't tell you in a few sentences how to deal with a home life made unhappy by bad parenting. What I can tell you, for what it's worth, is that some of the strongest, kindest adults I know have made their way upward from very bad family situations.
But 1 was more fortunate, and so are most teenagers. Every teen gets frustrated with his or her parents, but if you try to empathize, you are likely to have a better appreciation of them. After all, they've made you the center of their lives since you were born.
And one more thing (with me, there's always one more thing): you guys and gals aren't all that smart yet. Whether you believe me now or not, your parents know more than you do, so accept it.
My father forced me to wear braces on my teeth. I hated them and him (at the time) for making me go through that ordeal. But I was a jerk! Those braces made my later teen years and adulthood a lot easier. And you don't see many people on TV with bad teeth!
Figure it out: you are not smarter than the adults in your life. Someday you may well surpass them. But not now. No way. Accept it.
