FITNESS: FIRST STEP: MIND HOLDS THE KEY
Other articles might suggest specific gears you would reed for your workouts or the type of workouts you should do. Not me. Most of the fitness programmes fail because they miss the first most important step. This is called mental preparation.
One morning you decide to go for exercise. You wear your runners and your tracksuit and come out in fresh air for jogging. By the time you have jogged for 10 minutes, you are already very tired. You curse yourself. The pain is unbearable and you feel you were happy without this exercise. Prove that I am wrong. Tell me that it hasn't happened with you. Most people go to gyms for the first time and leave it with "That's it, never again in my life" expression. And they are not wrong. We human beings are basically restless and lack patience. We want to look like Brad Pitt or Arnie in just one week. If this was not so, why would wonder pills and drugs sell like hot cakes all over the world?
You should not start your exercise after one day you wake up with a 'lets be fit' mood. You should first prepare your mind and convince yourself that this is something you really need. You should stand before the mirror and say, "You are cute but you have a great capability to be much more cute. Your arms are much thinner and your body needs to be more muscular." That's it! That's your first workout. You should make yourself feel bad about your own situation. If you are fat and that's how you like it, then let me tell you one thing… You are fine the way you are. However, if you want to change your situation, if you are tired of being called a fatty or skinny, or if a person you love ignores you, then it's time you prove what you really are. Anyone can be fit. It does not really matter what you do. It can be body-building, gymnastics, aerobics or just plain jogging. Remember, the first battle to be fought is right in your mind. You will first have to convince yourself that you are tired of being unfit. Then you are ready for workouts.
Another very important thing that occurs at this stage is the feeling of 'I can't do it'. I still remember the first time I wore my running shoes and went for jogging in Chowrasta, Darjeeling. After 10 minutes, I was panting and coughing, years of chain smoking had done its damage. However, since I was mentally prepared, I kept my calm, smiled and started walking. It was true that I was not able to jog a long distance but I enjoyed whatever distance I had jogged. The idea here is to feel good, to feel fit. You have to gear up your mind for that. You will have to say, "I jogged for five minutes yesterday, today it was six minutes." For you it is a great achievement. Don't ever compare with other people. They might be jogging on their head and you might be struggling with your legs but that's alright.
